Background: Today, Senators John Thune (R-S.D.) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) introduced the Internet Tax Freedom Forever Act, legislation to extend the Internet Tax Freedom Act (ITFA) permanently.
The following statement is from USTelecom President Walter McCormick:
“USTelecom commends Senators Thune and Wyden, as well as their more than three dozen bipartisan cosponsors in the Senate, for their introduction of the Internet Tax Freedom Forever Act. This important measure would ensure that consumers’ access to the Internet remains free of state and local taxation, rather than becoming subject to tax when the current law expires this fall. It would also encourage broadband adoption among low-income households that cannot afford the regressive taxes that have typically been imposed on traditional telecom services, often at levels as high as double the sales tax rate. With companion legislation already introduced in the House, we hope the Congress will move this bipartisan initiative forward this spring.”
USTelecom is the nation’s leading trade association representing service providers and suppliers for the telecom industry. Its diverse member base ranges from large publicly traded communications corporations to small companies and cooperatives – all providing advanced communications services to markets both urban and rural.
